Recreational Coding

I've been struggling for a little while now with a distinct lack of enthusiasm for programming. Some of it is certainly due to a measure of chaos in my family as we work through a move and some health issues, but that definitely doesn't account for all of it. I've been spending some time reflecting on it, and I've come to the realization that it's something I've dealt with multiple times.

When I cut out recreational programming and throw myself completely into professional projects, inevitably I end up in a motivational void. My hours at work begin to drop, my mood changes, and my progress on work projects slows down. When I pick my personal projects back up, or start new ones, suddely I'm back in the game again! I'm excited about coding, excited about work, and cranking out results like a well oiled machine!

When your career is something that you passionately love to do, it's surprisingly easy for that passion to fade out. Make it a priority to spend time on side projects, experiments, and "playing around", because it can have a huge impact on your happiness now and your success in the long run!
